An Introduction to design: Skill sets for innovation and change
Design helps us identify opportunities at the intersection between the goals, motivations and needs of users, professionals, organisations and systems. It gives us practical tools for working out how to respond to those opportunities in creative ways, and for implementing those ideas in real life.
This module will introduce you to a full design process or a ‘design loop’ - the journey of creating and developing an idea into a solution, using a range of methods and tools to challenge and improve the idea so it is robust and fit for purpose.
Design methods and tools are important, but in order to be the best designers and get the most out of these processes, we need to bring our whole person to the task. Being a great designer is as much about the mindsets (head) and the skill sets (hands) as it is about the deeply personal attributes that each individual carries with them: the passion they carry in their hearts and the diverse understanding of local context - their feet - that cannot be learned without lived experience.
Keep this in mind as you explore this modules; and consider what might these exercises might look like in your unique local context with your own knowledge and experience, and those of the diverse range of people you are designing with and for.
