A focus on equity and accountability
Making public education more responsive in a changing world
Establishing an Education Authority
An Education Authority is needed to take the politics out of education and make public education more nimble and responsive.
The Authority will be responsible for public education in Bermuda and hold a dual focus of equity and accountability. Operating at arm’s length from the Bermuda government, it will be responsible for enabling and supporting all schools to achieve the best possible outcomes for our students.
We will move from a system of schools to a school system, fostering collaboration between schools in the interests of students and ensuring consistency and equity for all. Through school boards, operating under the remit of the authority, school communities will enjoy a greater level of autonomy with input from the community, educators, parents, and students.
Currently the education authority working group is creating the framework for what the Education Authority would look like. They are currently receiving feedback from the department of education, school boards, and other stakeholders.
The working group will continue to meet and collect data to help formalize the proposals as we move forward.
